Hi my name is Optimus… I am an Ice-cream-o-holic. I do not know when exactly this addiction started, but I must have been still little when it happened. It must be one of those children’s parties wherein ice cream is as ubiquitous as spaghetti and hotdogs.
My cravings were further worsen by Mamang Sorbetero*. His bell enticed me to go out of the house. I was like a kid of Hamelin being lured by the Pied Piper. Chocolate, cheese, mango… it didn’t matter, as long as it was cold and creamy.
As an adult, I thought I was already in control. The grocery freezer aisle still holds its enchantment, but a quick call to my sponsor made sure I get out without even touching those chilled containers.
On the last week of February 2009, I completely lost control. Singapore, with its hot weather, is probably the ice cream basket of South East Asia. I saw an ice cream stand in almost every corner. 7’11 stores provided lots of choices for those needing their fix late at night
Ben & Jerry’s, Movenpick, Wall’s, New Zealand Natural and Andersen’s were just some of the brands I saw. At first I just tried to ignore them, but they were everywhere. So, just to satisfy my curiosity I looked at the flavors. They have my favorites… hazelnut, dark chocolate and some that I haven’t tried before, like Hokey Pokey.
I pulled back and walked the other way. I thought the sound and sights of Singapore would be enough to distract me. But I was wrong. The sweltering temperature and constant visual bombardment proved too much for me… I simply had to give in.
